AXYS to deliver 8 buoys to the Marine Institute of MUN
September 6, 2012

AXYS Technologies Inc. (AXYS) has recently been awarded a contract by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUNs) for 8 oceanographic buoys for delivery later this year.  The buoys; 4 – 3 Metre buoys, 2- WatchKeeper™ buoys and 2 – TRIAXYS™ buoys will expand the existing near shore coastal network off Newfoundland, providing fishermen, vessel operators, weather forecasters and other stakeholders near real time access to a variety of marine meteorological and oceanographic data.

The large platform AXYS 3 Metre and WatchKeeper™ ODAS buoys to be delivered have similar configurations to systems previously provided to this program and will be established as permanent stations.   The smaller TRIAXYS™ buoys will provide wave climate data in various locals and may be seasonal in operation.  All systems are designed and built to withstand the harsh marine conditions experienced in coastal Newfoundland waters.  The large ODAS buoys come equipped with various meteorological and oceanographic sensors to report synoptic conditions. The data collected/processed by the WatchMan 500 controller is then transmitted to a central data server via Iridium satellite or VHF telemetry.  The AXYS WatchMan500TM Network Solution, will allow remote station configuration and diagnostics.   The large ODAS buoys will be fitted with a Type I Automatic Identification System (AIS) transmitter, which will allow nearby vessels access to the buoy’s data.

Tony Ethier, Manager of Marine Systems at AXYS stated: “We are very pleased that AXYS has been chosen to participate in this major network expansion and is a testament that Canadian companies are world leaders in supplying marine technology and equipment.  A significant aspect of this tender win was the provision of a multiyear engineering and technical support agreement to ensure the success of the network expansion.  We thank Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland for their continued support of our Company and equipment.”
