Red Tide Monitoring Buoys deployed along Canada's West Coast

Canada’s ability to detect red tide outbreaks along the west coast has strengthened with the recent deployment of two environmental monitoring buoys from AXYS Technologies Inc.  CARMS (Center for Applied Remote Sensing, Modeling and Simulation), and the Canadian Buoyed Monitoring Network, based at the University of Victoria, contracted AXYS to supply two smart buoys that can measure a variety of parameters in water and air.  In addition to parameters such as winds, temperature, pressure, and water currents, these buoys detect oxygen and light levels in water.  This data will then provide researchers with information regarding the presence of red tide or Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the water.

Harmful Algal Blooms, also know as Red Tide, occur as a result of the rapid reproduction of toxic, naturally occurring microscopic plankton. The plankton accumulates at the surface of the water and has a reddish hue, creating the appearance of a red tide of water.  These outbreaks can cause serious damage to individuals eating contaminated shellfish or to those communities dependent on the shellfish resource.

The data collected from the smart buoys is transmitted to a central data server via Iridium satellite telemetry. AXYS’ latest technology, the WatchMan500TM Network Solution, consisting of a sophisticated and scalable datalogger and a Data Management System, will allow remote system to sensor configuration.

AXYS Technologies Inc. designs, manufactures, distributes and maintains remote environmental data acquisition, processing and telemetry systems.  For further information contact AXYS at:  info@axystechnologies.com or visit www.axystechnologies.com.

CARMS links the needs of the BC remote sensing business community – particularly the small-to-medium enterprises - different industry sectors, and governments. For further information visit http://carms.geog.uvic.ca.

Canadian Buoyed Monitoring Network (CBMN) is a not-for-profit company whose objective is to create a research, development and commercialization platform to build Canadian capacity for sustainable management of ocean resources. For further information visit http://cbmn.geog.uvic.ca:16080/cbmn/.
