AXYS sends Smart Buoy to SmartBay

In partnership with the Canadian Centre for Marine Communications (CCMC) of St. John’s, Newfoundland and its project partners AMEC Earth and Environmental, International Communications and Navigation (ICAN) Limited and Earth Information Technologies (NL) Limited, AXYS Technologies Inc. (AXYS) has recently delivered a 3 Metre oceanographic buoy as part of a contract awarded earlier this year.  This ‘Smart’ buoy will help form part of SmartBay, an ocean observing network located at Placentia Bay along Newfoundland’s southern coastline and is intended to enhance weather forecasting for the Placentia Bay area.  SmartBay will eventually link in several buoys along the Newfoundland coastline, providing fishermen, vessel operators, weather forecasters and other stakeholders near real time access to a variety of marine and oceanographic data.

The AXYS 3 Metre buoy has been designed and built with various sensors to measure water and air quality parameters. The data collected will then be transmitted to a central data server via Iridium satellite telemetry.  AXYS’ latest technology, the WatchMan500TM Network Solution, consisting of a sophisticated and scalable datalogger and a Data Management System, will allow remote system to sensor configuration.   The buoy will also be fitted with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder which will allow transiting vessels access to the buoy’s data and provide a parallel medium for buoy to shore data transmission.

Don Bryan, Manager of Marine Systems at AXYS stated: “We are very pleased to have been chosen to participate in this innovative and leading edge Canadian technology demonstration project.  AXYS is proof that Canadian companies can and do provide world-leading marine technology and equipment. We thank CCMC and their partners for their support so far and look forward to seeing SmartBay grow in the years to come.”

Bill Carter, Executive Director of CCMC stated that AXYS was selected due to its reputation as an industry-leading supplier of buoys and oceanographic equipment.  “A primary goal of SmartBay is to provide better information in support of better decision making; we are confident that the technology and expertise provided by AXYS will contribute greatly to achieving this goal.”

SmartBay is supported by the Government of Canada under the Oceans Action Plan
