AXYS rolls out bilingual Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) for airports

AXYS Technologies Inc. (AXYS) is pleased to announce completion of their bilingual Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) for airports. Current AWOS designs monitor weather conditions through sophisticated sensors attached to a ten-meter tower centrally located on an airfield. The AWOS relays this information in real-time to a computer display, while broadcasting automated voice weather reports in METAR format. To date, these voice transmissions have been computer-synthesized in English only.
Employing renowned STR - SpeechTech text-to-speech technology, the new bilingual AWOS will transmit a full range of weather conditions using digitized, pre-recorded words and phrases from an extensive voice database. Initial bilingual stations will be English and French, with English/Spanish in development.
“Bilingual AWOS will improve clarity in the transmission of aviation weather data, thereby enhancing aviation safety while accommodating regional preferences,“ says Paul Rutten, Marketing Lead for Transportation Systems at AXYS. Both AXYS and STR are technology companies directly involved in the air transport industry, and are located in the Victoria area of British Columbia.
