Inaccurate Weather Forecasts Costs $Billions US
Demand for accurate weather monitoring is increasing, as researchers are able to put a price on the impact of inaccurate weather forecasts. USA Today reports that the need for more accurate 30-hour forecasts is rising throughout the US. The power utilities company, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), has hired its own meteorologist to ensure that weather forecasts are as accurate as possible. The reason for TVA and other power companies' interest in weather conditions lies in the impact of different termperatures of power needs for any given day. Power companies use the 30-hour weather forecast to plan how much power will be required on a specific day. Inaccurate forecasts can be very costly to power companies and ultimately consumers. "Better weather forecast allows the most cost-effective set of [power] plants to be available to meet demand". It also allows power suppliers to better anticipate extra demand on electricity supply and prevent blackouts.
Del Jones reported "The annual cost of electricity could decrease by at least $1billion if the accuracy of weather forecasts improved 1 degree Farenheit". This finding has become a catalyst for companies to seek out improved weather monitoring solutions. Accurate weather can be directly correlated with cost savings and this has power companies demanding the highest level of accuracy possible.
