WatchMan500 Network Solution

How the WatchMan500™ Network Solution is Used

The main components of the WatchMan500™ Network Solution are as follows:

  • WatchMan500™
  • Data Management System (DMS)

Conceptual Layout of WM500 Network Solution

The AXYS Technologies Inc. (AXYS) WatchMan500™ is a modularly designed unit capable of being deployed in remote and rugged locations for long durations. It consists of a multiple access communication bus with one ‘master’ module and up to 127 ‘slave’ modules. Up to 30 sensors can be connected into each module. The master module controls communications and contains the sensor configuration data. The master module collates the sensor data from all modules and processes it into a report, which is then sent to the host in a variety of possible forms, including VHF transmission, cellular or land-line phone transmission, satellite transmission, serial interface, TCP/IP and others.

Using two-way communication, the master module forms the link between the client PC and the Watchman 500™, by either querying or controlling any of the slave modules or by direct communication with any sensor. It provides a level of autonomy, enabling the WatchMan500™ to disable a failed sensor or module, and continue operating, rather than having the entire system fail. The diagnostic features remotely identify the exact nature of a malfunction in advance of a service call, thereby reducing the time spent on site.

The WatchMan500™ modular setup enables easy addition or removal of sensors and modules, without having to turn the unit off.  If the sensor is recognized (i.e. it is in the sensor library), the WatchMan500™ will auto-configure the sensor I/O, otherwise the sensors are user configured. To add more sensors, simply open up the box and clip a new module onto the bus and add the sensor connections. To swap out a defective sensor, remove the old sensor at the Bulgin connector and plug in the new one.

AXYS offers several versions of the DMS software to meet a variety of user needs. The full version of the DMS allows for complete management and customization of a WatchMan500™ network or individual station.  The Configurator version allows for individual station command and control and is suited for technicians working on a specific station in the field.  A Development Kit is also available for users wishing to customize the WatchMan500™ Network Solution to a specific application.
