MetSpec™

Radition shield for meteorological equipmentAXYS Technologies Inc. (AXYS) is proud to introduce MetSpec™, a new high-performance radiation shield for meteorological equipment, developed in conjunction with the U.K. Meteorological Office

The MetSpec Radiation Shield is constructed of durable UPVC and aluminium. Unlike traditional wooden screens, MetSpec does not require regular maintenance and has a longer operational life span. This specially constructed screen has lower thermal and humidity latency than wooden screens, which translates to increased response times and improved measurement accuracy.

MetSpec’s synthetic and inorganic materials offer outstanding UV protection as well as resistance to biological and chemical degradation. For increased durability the aluminium frame is subjected to a ten-stage cleaning and priming process, followed by an electrostatic application of polyester powder baked on for added resilience.

MetSpec louvers are made from premium grade acrylic (PMMA) with added UV stabilizers for an extremely low yellowing index. Exterior louvers are coloured white and interior louvers are coloured black. This colour combination is based on test results from the U.K. Meteorological Office, proving that a white exterior and black interior produced the best radiation shielding, resulting in improved internal sensor readings. MetSpec comes equipped with either four standard thermometer mountings, or two vertical mounting rails.

MetSpec is currently used in applications for both manual and automated observations in the U.K. Synoptic Station Network, and on oil and gas rigs in the North Sea, Iceland, Ireland, Belgium, Hong Kong, and Oman.
